So… Where does the name “Kai Kotch” come from?

Kotch” (often also spelled “cotch”) is a Western Caribbean slang term used either as:

· a verb meaning “to relax” or “to ’hang out’ and relax with others”  or “to sit and chill out”

or

· a noun meaning “a relaxing place” or “a comfortable seat”

Tim and Tonya Adam discovered a great “kotch” in Rum Point on Grand Cayman, tucked away in a tranquil cove that is part of the well-known Cayman Kai development.  Tim was born in Jamaica but grew up on Grand Cayman — his Mom is a Caymanian whose family have been in the island since its earliest settlement.  Tonya was born in Texas and also lived in Illinois, North Carolina, and back in Texas before marrying the island boy and moving to the islands.

Tim’s grandfather Cap’n Bertie as he was affectionately known, was a true Caymanian seaman having the ability to build, rig, and sail the wooden schooners for which the island was known.  He spent much of his working life as a “hard-hat diver”, working from his shipyard in the port of Colón, Panama, on the Caribbean side of the “Canal Zone”.  If you visit the new tourist attraction Pedro St.James, look for the “Steadman Bodden House” and homesite on the western side of the grounds.  That traditional wattle-and-daub house stood for about a century on Mary Street in George Town, and was built by Cap’n Bertie’s father Steadman, who was nicknamed “Mac Iron”.  Tim spent the first few years of his life in that same home in its original location on Mary Street, with his brothers, parents, grandparents, and a generous sprinkling of cousins.
